How to add text to a PDF

Three simple steps
  1. 01

    Choose the PDF

Open your document. The text tool is ready for you to add new words on top of the existing page.

  2. 02

    Click and type

Click on the page to create a text box. Type your words, then use the properties panel to adjust the available font, size, color and alignment.

  3. 03

    Position and download

Select and move the text into place. Check its size at a comfortable zoom, preview the page and download the finished PDF.

Good for flat forms and quick additions

Use a text box for an answer line that is not clickable, a date beside a signature, a reference number or a note for the reader. If your PDF already has interactive fields, Fill PDF is usually faster and keeps answers aligned to those fields.

Match the page, within reason

Pick a supported font and a readable size that fits the space. The original document may use a custom embedded font that is not available for new text. Aim for a clean, readable addition instead of assuming a perfect match. Review special characters in the exported file.

Adding text is different from changing text

New text sits over the existing PDF content. It does not reflow a paragraph or remove the old wording. To revise a document’s original sentences, use its source file when possible. Covering words with whiteout is only a visual change, not secure removal.

Good to know

A few common questions.

Can I write on a PDF on a Mac?

Yes. Use a current browser, open the PDF and add text boxes. The same browser workflow also works on other supported desktop systems.

Can I use this for a scanned form?

Yes. Place text over the scanned page. The scan remains an image underneath, and your answers are added as new content.

Can I remove the original text with this tool?

No. Added text and whiteout do not securely erase original content. Use a dedicated redaction tool when information must be irrecoverably removed.
